The 304 Detour Clinic+Tour

Wolfhaven Tree Farm

4629 Cherry Run Rd

Grafton, WV 26354

July 17-19, 2026

Join Kane Wagner from Appalachian ADV for a special Intermediate - ADV Touring - Riding Clinic at the 304 Detour Rally in Fairmont, West Virginia on July 17-19, 2026. This Clinic+Tour event will only have 8 open spots plus 2 Riding Coaches. Participants must bring their own bikes. If you would like to come to the clinic but have already signed up for the 304, contact [email protected] for a discount code that covers the price you paid for the admission to the rally.

A Moto-Camp Riding Clinic will be on Friday July 17th at the Wolfhaven Tree Farm and include basic ADV & Dual Sport bike set-up, theory and drills, and real-world riding tests. We will review "best practices" for ADV Touring and also perform drills with camp-loaded bikes. We will camp at Wolfhaven on Friday night and any truck/trailers can be parked here through our return back to Wolfhaven on Sunday. On Saturday and Sunday we will utilize the 304 Detour Intermediate ADV Loop for the Tour portion and run 100 miles south, camp off the bikes near Canaan Valley, and run 100 miles north back to Wolfhaven. The Intermediate ADV Loop covers beautiful West Virginia terrain including paved roads, dirt/gravel roads, and some rugged drivable trails to help test our skills!

Please bring plenty of fluids (hydration pack or bottle holster attached to motorcycle), snacks, and appropriate riding gear (i.e. riding boots, riding pants and jacket with armor, helmet, gloves, weather-appropriate layers/rain gear). Your motorcycle should be current on all maintenance requirements and it is highly recommended that participants also have fairly fresh ADV/Dual Sport tires, skid plates, and other crash protection on the bikes. Tires should be knobbly in nature but we highly recommend more aggressive tires, especially for this Intermediate Clinic and for the 304 Detour! Not all 50/50's are the same, tread pattern including gap spacing and depth make a huge difference in tire performance! We recommend a fairly fresh tire with defined knobblies that are similar in nature to the MOTOZ Tractionator series (Adventure/Dual Venture, Rallz, Desert H/T). Check out the Tire Conundrum article and our FAQs for Appalachian ADV Events for more information. Contact [email protected] with any specific questions about tire selection.

Our goal is to push your limits and get you out of your comfort zone a bit to help build confidence in your machine and your own skills. We keep the clinics small in order to semi-customize your experience and to help build a temporary team of riders. We are all there to help pick up your bike and your spirits when the bike inevitably takes a closer look at the ground. This ADV Ride Clinic is intended to familiarize riders with the theory, physics, and skills necessary to ride ADV & Dual Sport bikes on gravel and dirt surfaces. We do not expect riders to master every drill at the conclusion of the course but to have a solid foundation, recognition of weak spots, and the ability to take these theories and drills home allowing continued practice to build upon the riders' skills.

Friday Schedule:

  • Check-In and Meet-n-Greet will occur at the Wolfhaven Tree Farm from Noon to 12:30
  • The clinic session will be from 12:30 to approximately 4:30 pm
  • 304 Detour Rally gates officially open at 5:00 pm and Clinic Riders can swing over to join in the festivities at the 304 Base Camp

Saturday we plan to have the Rider's Meeting at 9am and kickstands up right after!

The point of the Clinic+Tour is to give people experience in moto camping and experience riding a loaded bike through multiple terrain types including pavement, gravel roads, and Drivable Trails. Making this a one day Clinic and a two day Tour helps to ease people into the experience with seasoned Coaches and Riders. We are there to help riders experiment and explore the possibilities of camping off of the motorcycle and riding those bikes through some technical terrain. Ideally riders of this Clinic+Tour have some level of off-road experience on their bikes either through one of our Level 1 Beginner to Intermediate Riding Clinic (or similar) or direct experience riding an ADV bike on trail-type terrain.

Friday we will camp at the Wolfhaven base camp and there will be a bathroom available with a shower. Friday evening we will be grilling burgers for everyone.

On Saturday and Sunday each rider will need to carry their camping gear on the bike during the Tour. Since it is a one nighter on the road, riders should be able to load light. Tent, bag, pillow, and the necessities. Riders will likely need a mini-burner to warm water. We will provide coffee (camping style coffee in tea bags and/or instant) and at least one camping style meal (generally requiring water to be boiled). Moto Camp Nerd is a great moto-camping resource and he is who we will be working with to outfit parts of the Clinic+Tour. We can also offer Coaching through the planning process (what to bring/pack, gear suggestions, etc.), providing guidance and opportunities to test your skills during the ride, and there for any questions after we get home.

During the Tour portion, we will stop at local spots so riders can refuel, grab lunch, and grab any needed food items to supplement our meals at camp. Reach out to [email protected] for any questions!

"You're doing a really good thing for the beginners of, not just Adventure, but riding as a whole. You were very organized and covered everything you need to know." - Cody from Sandy Lake, Pennsylvania

"What a great time. Being new to the ADV world and having a Harley-Davidson Pan America, Kane showed me what this bike is capable of. I learned tons of techniques and gained confidence in handling off road obstacles." -Matt from Cleveland, Ohio

"Kane Wagner is a wonderful ADV riding instructor. His clinics are so helpful to learn and apply the basic skills needed to take your riding adventures to the next level." -Tambra from Titusville, Pennsylvania

"Very good course! I got into ADV riding 3 years ago but haven’t tested my skills like I did this weekend. Highly recommended if you want to learn some new practice drills to sharpen your off-road riding ability and improve confidence. No classroom, you’re learning while on your bike all day, which was perfect for me." -Dan from Aliquippa, Pennsylvania

"Would definitely recommend the clinic I have been off-road on dirt bikes all my life and Kane taught me some things... on my Honda CB500X Rally Raid." -Steven from Boardman, Ohio

"Out of all of the trainers I've worked with, Kane Wagner is the absolute best coach! His feedback and classes are so personalized and wonderful! He's a treasure to the ADV community!" -Scott from Akron, Ohio

"[The] Clinic was absolutely superb. Kane is an amazing teacher. (I still have a lot to learn and a long way to go.) But the group was also so helpful. Everytime I fell/got stuck, all of [them] came rushing in to help." -Sony from Suwanee, Georgia

Clinic Riders will be emailed more information prior to the session including discount codes from some of our sponsors.
