22 Motorcycle Words and Phrases and My Take on Them…
ADV – Adventure motorcycling, specifically riding a mid- to large-sized motorcycle on non-paved terrain; there are ADV-specific motorcycles in production, but any motorcycle can be modified to perform ADV riding

ADV-Touring – Reference ADV, loading up the bike with gear for multi-day ride utilizing both paved and non-paved terrain

ATGATT – “All The Gear All The Time”, refers to always wearing appropriate safety gear every time that you kick your leg over the motorbike (i.e. helmet, jacket & pants with padding, gloves, boots, etc.); can be used as “ATGATT’ed”, as in the process of putting on your gear

Bushwacking – finding new trails and/or terrain, creating new trails, or going off-trail (not on posted lands or at official off-road parks/areas though, that is illegal!)

Crash Protection – personal protection is referenced in the ATGATT listing above and includes wearable protective gear for your various body parts; bike protection includes items such as crash bars, skid plates, handguards, folding mirrors, radiator covers, and even luggage rack systems; some may consider or reference these bike-specific crash protection items as Farkles (see below listing)
Dab – when riding in squirrely terrain the time comes when you need to drop a boot off the foot peg and use the Earth to help you balance before gravity brings the whole thing crashing down, that is what dabbing is, not that arms in the air B/S

Dispersed – referring to camping in remote locations generally with little or no amenities, sometimes for a small fee or no fee; some State and National Forests will have specific camping locations that contain only a fire ring, picnic table and/or a vault toilet (or nothing but a clearing), sometimes the guidelines for the area will allow camping in any location as long as you are so far off the road, please review posted criteria and restrictions before venturing out

Dual Sport
 – Plated, street legal, off-road style motorcycle that can tackle pavement (albeit not very comfortably) but is more at home on the ugly (read beautiful) trails of the world

Enduro – long haul motorbikin’ on off-road courses with obstacles, usually in stages, with time restrictions

Farkle – “Fancy Accessory Really Kool Likely Expensive” or a combination of “Function” and “Sparkle”; add-on accessory for a motorcycle that gives pizzazz but also provides a specific function (maybe only in the eyes of the specific rider); example of items include heating gear, cup holders, GPS mounts & units, etc.; also can be used as “farkling”, “farkled”, “farkler(s)”
Hero Section – the expert sections of a particular route; difficult tracks either on ADV or off-road courses; generally, an ADV or off-road route can include these difficult sections and provide an easier bypass

LSAMC – Latterday Shunpikers Adventure Motorcycle Club; reference “The Origin: Latterday Shunpikers” article for more information

Moto-Camp – ADV-Touring specifically to camp; loading down an ADV bike with all camping necessities for a multi-day trip into the wilderness; there is a Farkle rabbit hole with this one

Motorcycle (AKA Motorbike, Motor-Scooter, 2-Wheeled Rocket, Hog, Freedom Finder, Twisty Tackler, Iron Horse, Iron Pony, Iron Steed, Dos Ruedas, Friend & Companion, etc.) – two wheeled contraption, gasoline or electric powered, that many people form a bond with while exploring the varied terrain of the world

“On the Toad” – Gabe’s auto-corrected text to his family when he was ready to ride out one day, now used specifically for the launch of each ride

Rubber – fancy talk for a motorcycle tire; definitely another rabbit-hole, hot-topic item among riders; comes in an array of flavors from straight street to 50/50 to dirt and everything in between
Saddle – that place where your butt is at when sitting on a motorbike, not sure I had to explain that one

Superslab – divided highways, interstates, freeways, or turnpikes; high speed riding

Tarmac – alternate terminology for paved surfaces

Twisty – the curves in a road, usually referring to paved roads; ideal for any street rider to feel that perfect point in a motorbike’s lean with proper braking, acceleration, and trajectory that gets us Earth-bound folk the closest we can to the feeling of weightlessness; also used as “twistys” or “twisties”

2-Track – normally referring to a single lane dirt road in the wilderness with only two tracks where tires of a vehicle would traverse; commonly also referred to as a Jeep Trail or Drivable Trail; can be used as a Hero Section depending on difficulty

“You’ll Be Fine” – the official, unofficial motto of LSAMC (compliments of Brian); when in doubt about a particularly sketchy track that lays ahead, use this motto and send your buddy onward to check it out before you go.  You can never be too safe…
